Early Childhood- 

 

Visual

Kinesthetic

Auditory

Includes ages from 0 to 8 years old. Young children at this age need a lot of movement and have a hard time sitting for long periods of time. They can sit for small amounts of time and listen for only a short period. They also tire quickly and can be competitive with each other the older they become. 

  • They need movement frequently

  • Hands on activites are important

  • Use of Manipulatives will allow nice hands on activiies

  • Drama can help demonstrate pieces of reading

  • Models can help students interact

  • Field Trips

  • Music is an essential tool

  • They won't be able to listen for long periods of time

  • Reciting the content outloud with children is important

  • Buddy work alows students to share their ideas and listen to others. 

  • Charts and diagrams are positive visuals for students

  • Highlighted important ideas so it sticks out to the students

  • Movies are an easy and helpful tool to engage and teach students

  • Pictures to visualize information

Middle Childhood-

Includes ages from 9 to 12 years old. In middle childhood, children are able to sit for longer periods of time, able to focus and work collaboratively in groups. They are able to work on long-term goals and projects with guidance. They are just beginning to enter puberty and have tremendous changes happening physically as well as psychologically. The social implications of their physical development may be reflected in their group and individual work, and class participation. Self esteem and attitudes are harmed or harnessed during this time and class activities can foster acceptance and the development of values and confidence. VISUAL

 

  • Use colors, graphs and visual organizers to prioritize schedules, time management and assignments.

  • Use technology to engage in the classroom through overhead projections, videos, and multimedia.

 

Kinesthetic

  • Hands on, creative work that allows for construction and creation

  • This age group likes to help others and their community through hands on activities and service projects

  • Enjoy participating in class trips and adventures to engage and create movement

 

AUDITORY

  • Use video, podcasts, and auditory memory cues to assist with learning.

  • Use multiple methods of presenting verbal information such as tone, music, and technology.

  • Have student present information to group or another as teaching and learning tool. 

Adolescence-

Includes from ages 12 to 18. In adolescence, children continue to mature both mentally and physically. They begin going through puberty, form their own ideas, opinions, and beliefs, and yearn for a sense of independence. Socially, they are very self-conscious and concerned with acceptance from their peers rather than from adults.

  • Enjoy hands on work

  • Can be physically awkward at times

  • Benefit from some physical activity

Visual
  • Visual aids like powerpoints can be benficial

  • Pictures and visuals not as relevant as with younger ages

Auditory
  • Enjoy group discussions    

  • Lectures can be beneficial-longer attention span
